Wellhouse Leisure To Debut Ford Tourneo Custom Campervan
Wellhouse Leisure is set to be the first UK converter to launch a campervan model based on the new Ford Tourneo Custom, which is part of Ford’s all-new commercial vehicle range and is also available in van form as the Transit Custom, for aspiring DIY converters.
The new Ford Tourneo Custom is the luxury, people-mover stablemate of the Transit van, and has been praised by the media for its good looks and car-like drivability, and for giving rivals like Volkswagen a serious run for their money, making it perfect as a campervan conversion.
Wellhouse Leisure, a UK market leader in award-winning compact campervan conversions, is the first to develop and launch a campervan version of the new Ford in the UK. An elevating roof will provide an extra large double bed, and a three-seat rear bench seat below, it can seat and sleep up to five people, and has a luxury specification, including comforts such as a heater, fridge, gas cooker and sink, with a hook-up for mains electricity.
(As well as expanding the van’s sleeping capacity, a roof bed is also a great way of making a van like this seem bigger than it is, as for a couple travelling alone, the living area below does not have to be reconfigured every night.)
David Elliott, managing director of Wellhouse Leisure, said:
“This is a really exciting new model for the UK campervan market. We were really impressed with the new Ford Tourneo Custom when we first saw it and knew it would be an ideal base vehicle as a campervan conversion.
The old Transit never struck the right chord with campervan customers, but the new Tourneo Custom looks really good and is great to drive, plus it comes with all the latest Ford technology to make convenient to live with, economical to run and much better value than most rivals.”
The Ford Tourneo Custom’s attractive new design makes an ideal base for a campervan thanks to its high specification and compact exterior dimensions similar to a large family estate car or MPV. At 4.97 metres long, with a turning circle of 10.9 metres, it is really easy to use as an everyday vehicle. Its practical shape also provides a generous and versatile living space.
Compared to most rival campervans, many will be surprised and delighted by some of the new features Ford offers for the new Tourneo Custom giving the Wellhouse Leisure conversion one of the highest specifications available. This includes FordSYNC for hands-free music and phone calls, a leather-covered steering wheel with remote audio controls, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, front fog lights and automatic headlights, plus heated windscreen and power-folding door mirrors. Prices will offer excellent value for money, and are expected to start from under £39,995.
For economical touring, the 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCI engine offers Ford’s latest ECOnetic technology, with auto start/stop to deliver up to 43.5mpg and emissions from 172g/km.
The Tourneo’s van sibling, the Transit Custom, has earned a class-leading 5-star Euro NCAP rating and Wellhouse will ensure its Ford Tourneo Custom conversion meets the strict European whole vehicle type approval, plus full National Caravan Council approval to meet UK standards.
I’ve always liked Wellhouse conversions and the quality and design is first class. A Wellhouse Tourneo Custom conversion could finally be a genuine contender to the countless VW conversions that are on the market — as a two-time Transit owner, I’d definitely consider another Ford in favour of a VW.
