Skagway to Haines Junction via the Carcross Desert & Whitehorse: USA / Canada 2018
Our aim today was to head north on the Klondike Highway to Carcross, then onto Whitehorse and round to Haines Junction. Spending the night a little further on at Destruction Bay.
We left Skagway early calling at the Duey Road overlook which gave us a final view out over Skagway and the two new cruise ships that had arrived overnight! We then headed north, leaving the US and entering back into Canada. The scenery was amazing over the White Pass reaching around 3300m.
We stopped by the Bove Island viewpoint and enjoyed some flask coffee and a cookie then headed straight on to Carcross and the Carcross desert.
Carcross was a really lovely little town with very friendly people and an interesting and very old General Store.
Carcross desert was superb, so beautiful and once again we were unbelievably lucky with the weather. We walked to the top of the dunes and were rewarded with amazing views – highly recommended.
We then had our lunch at the Emerald Lake overlook as we headed onto Whitehorse.
We did a very quick whistle stop tour of Whitehorse visiting the SS Klondike – last of the big steam ships, then onto the longest wooden fish ladder in the world before hitting Main Street.
We had a big driving day today so didn’t hang around and set off back round to Haines Junction where we enjoyed a super tea at Frosty’s!
As we then headed over to Destruction Bay we had the incredible pleasure of watching a black bear at the side of the road, amazing.
It was then time for a good night’s sleep before we made our way back to Tok, then onto Glenallen and Copper Center.
