Independence Day in Seward, Alaska: USA / Canada 2018

It was a real treat for us to spend Independence Day 2018 in Seward. We’d read how busy it gets as Independence day combines with the extremely popular Mount Marathon Race, and lots of people advise you to stay clear of the Kenai Peninsula in general due to the heavy holiday traffic. For us however, it was one of the highlights of our holiday.

Traffic travelling into Seward mid-afternoon on the 3rd was absolutely fine. We called at Safeway for supplies (including a 4th July birthday cake!) parked up at our motel, no problem, and headed out for a wander. We couldn’t believe the number of RVs, motorhomes, campervans, tents and people that were around enjoying the holiday. The campsites, parks and roadsides were full. The atmosphere was amazing, with BBQ’s and social get-togethers happening. All very relaxed and extremely friendly.

The celebrations began at midnight with a beautiful fireworks display over the water. Then, it is was bed ready for the big day – July 4th, Independence Day.

We decided to head down into main Seward for the day watching the crazy people complete in the Mount Marathon Race. We had a view of the mountain out of the back windows in our room – it is very steep! This race may only be around 3.5 miles but it climbs to the top of Mount Marathon, an elevation gain of 3,022 feet! To top it off the Men’s winner this year completed it in just 42 minutes and 13 seconds….eeek! It was an amazing thing to watch and it has to be said a massive amount of respect goes to everyone that takes part. If it interests you, you can check it out – here. However, this isn’t a race you can just walk into, first-time entrants must have completed the entire circuit prior to race day!

After most competitors were down from the mountain, Seward held their annual 4th of July parade with classic American cars, community groups and emergency vehicles all taking part.

All this, combined with the best ever roasted corn on the cob, the most delicious ice-creams and a lovely drink from the Seward Brewing Company, it was truly a fantastic day…once again with blue skies and sunshine.
