Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Washington: USA 2017
As our road trip was nearing it’s end in Seattle we made one more stop, the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument in Washington. Leaving Hood River early we crossed the state line from Oregon back into Washington, and had a brief stop at our favourite all time roadside treat – Krispy Kreme. They really are much much better in the US compared to the UK – we don’t have them here!
Then it was north to the Mount St. Helens Visitor Center at Seaquest / Silver Lake to check out the weather forecast. It said snow and low visibility, but as we were only there for that day we set out and started on the drive up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory. As we passed the Elk Rock viewpoint the temperature dropped and we entered thick fog. Sure enough at the top, there was snow, thick fog and drizzle – we couldn’t see a thing but the drive was great!
